Weight Loss Drugs Do You Understand Them

Each year, increasing numbers of people around the world are becoming overweight, including school children according to recent studies. Often extreme measures are used to control this problem including surgery but others decide that dieting and physical activities are preferable. However, desperate people often make poor decisions and decide to take weight loss drugs instead as they are less expensive than surgery.

The drugs work by increasing the serotonin levels in the brain that makes it believe that the stomach is already full and thus, increases the person's metabolic rate. It was only after scientists discovered that these drugs had side effects and were related to the cause heart valve disease that these were taken off the shelves. Since then newer drugs have been developed and doctors continue to prescribe them although they are still awaiting FDA certification.

The use of drugs that help weight reduction has become so commonplace that it is almost certain that you know of someone who has tried them. The idea that a simple drug can change everything without the need to change the diet or sacrificing anything is very tempting. The weight loss drug manufacturers have spent a huge sum on research but cannot compare to the amount spent by consumers.

Despite the advances in this type of weight control pills, there are still problems, some of which people are willing to put up with including sickness and diarrhea. But they are not the only side effects and some can be more harmful including heart attacks, tremors, stroke, hallucinations and renal failure although this is not a complete list just the more serious side effects.

The side effects will depend of the person taking them and can be related to their lifestyle but a consultation with the doctor first, rather than buying them over the counter can help to reduce the effects but even stopping the use of the drugs completely can cause problems. For instance it is not uncommon for people taking weight control pills to experience other side effects like sleep problems, tiredness, mood swings, stomach problems and more.

Although these weight loss drugs do work, their benefits can be improved with a properly worked out food program that your dietitian can help with and regular exercise. A low calorie diet would consist of meals that contain vitamins, minerals and fiber which are all essential for good health; the best source is fruit and vegetables.
